The agony of defeat is never fun.

And if you really cared Crosby almost always takes optional skates during the regular season (if feeling 100% healthy). In playoffs he usually does early in the series, but not always. Caps should have listened to Yoda.

Tough way to end what was such a banner/record setting year. I have completed a full 24 hours of denial and am ready to move on...I think.

This season really almost feels like a death in the family. Ok...thats maybe going to far, but really, what an empty feeling right now.

Anyway, seems to me that we were completely out coached this series. We never made any sort of adjustment and that cost us.

Sometimes I get the feeling that BB inherited an unbelievably talented roster and is too much of a players coach. I love his quotes and like him as a person, but I don't get the sense that he really has control of this team.

I hope they learn from this and make the appropriate changes to the team philosophy. Tweak the system and get a few Volchenkov type guys to go with our young puck rushing D.

oh...boy....time to start false hope for my Redskins.

looking forward to reading you in Sept/Oct.

all the best,

CapsFaninNYCJonathannoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14971098.post-49084527734959440812010-04-29T21:23:10.905-04:002010-04-29T21:23:10.905-04:00Eloquent and devastating.Eloquent and devastating.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14971098.post-48120819485984253122010-04-29T17:35:43.135-04:002010-04-29T17:35:43.135-04:00"It became a study in pre-lockout hockey – im..."It became a study in pre-lockout hockey – immensely boring and stunningly effective."

I looked at my brother last night and made almost the exact comment. If I actually took the time to write everything I was feeling this morning; I'd still be at it now, at 4:30 p.m. - I'm all on board with your post.Mianoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14971098.post-2673263457530823742010-04-29T12:55:15.926-04:002010-04-29T12:55:15.926-04:00>>>>"One thing that is as obvious...>>>>"One thing that is as obvious as the sun in the sky on a clear day is that this team has learned nothing."

Bingo. After 2008, it seemed like this new version of the Capitals weren't playoff chokers--despite the first round loss, they fought their way back in and never really gave up.

After Game 5 this year, I saw last night's final result coming.

They had the opportunity to close the series out, but they played like they didn't care, and they gave Montreal hope again. The general lack of attendance of the optional practices--especially by their captain, who skips them constantly--has bothered me for more than a season, as does the amount of the optionals. The result is the quality of their play on ice, despite their talent. Talent only gets you so far.

That said, I don't blame the players that much. For the most part, they did come to play. The issues I see come from the coaching staff. The lack of adjustments is becoming a damning indictment of Gabby's coaching ability, and it only serves to highlight other questionable decisions he has made. He's not going to be let go, but he'll be on a short leash.exwhalernoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14971098.post-59274447427442663312010-04-29T11:20:20.846-04:002010-04-29T11:20:20.846-04:00"...We...have no response. I too have been rooting for this team for a long time (since the early 90's or so, and my dad since they became a team in 1974).

After the team got rid of Kolzig (wrongfully in my opinion) it seemed like things were different. I started to think "we actually might win a Cup here". I started going to numerous games, bought a nice Ovi jersey, built the team up to people here in Baltimore who mildly cared, rearranged MY schedule to watch them play, etc. But, the end result is no different than before.

Like you said, at least in the 90's and early 2000's, the teams who blew series leads left it all out there on the ice in some form. This team, this year, did not. They definitely looked past Montreal and started thinking about when they would face Pittsburgh. BB did so too. He can deny it all he wants, but he thought that on skill alone he would get out of the first round scoring 6 goals or more a game. That is a coach and a team who does not understand how to win in this league.

It seems like under BB it will be the same song and dance. SE champs, 100 plus total points, 1 or 2 seed, first or second round bowout.

BB should go. He was severely outcoached. They need someone in there to light a fire under the guys. Like you said, "optional" practices that are not attended by your Captain and some of the core guys shows, to me, that the success of the team is "optional".

It will definitely be a long offseason in DC. Many will point fingers and think of what could have been. But what is is a team of wannabes who were dismantled by a team of will, heart and determination. "Skill" was not something Montreal possessed, and you know what, I will take heart and will and determination over "skill" any day of the week.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14971098.post-76461208120372942582010-04-29T08:51:31.250-04:002010-04-29T08:51:31.250-04:00That's right - take all your stats and stick t...That's right - take all your stats and stick them where the sun don't shine!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14971098.post-8471370452516837042010-04-29T06:37:13.985-04:002010-04-29T06:37:13.985-04:00hopefully Ted reads this...you are a fantastic wri...hopefully Ted reads this...you are a fantastic writer - I only learned about you recently, but I have not missed a day in quite a while.
