Both Larry Murphy and Kevin Hatcher were "whooped" WHILE they were Capitals - before ever being traded at all.maxlake2https://www.blogger.com/profile/14676721945804694171noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14971098.post-65723695907223478512019-03-23T22:40:58.573-04:002019-03-23T22:40:58.573-04:00MY dad and i attended countless games at the cap c...MY dad and i attended countless games at the cap center in the late 80s (seated in the section behind the goal that the visitors shot against in the 1st and 3rd periods)...and can confirm that larry murphy was whopped when he was a capital. I was young, but my understanding is he was whopped because he was considered a bit of a pussy and didn't play physically enough. It was painful though when he came back as and dominated the caps as an opponent.

While I'm walking down memory lane, a few other great recollections were screaming "hextall" (to get in the head of the flyers gaolie) and when Dan quayle would attend games, he would get ripped apart (possibly also by a whoop, but I can't remember)Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05227385629043976815noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14971098.post-56682068855266240462015-12-08T16:11:39.520-05:002015-12-08T16:11:39.520-05:00I grew up in section 104 of the old Caps center. It continued when he left but was also used on other current Caps from time to time when they were having a bad game. Later, it became more of a thing for former Caps like you described. I don't think it came from the word "wus" as another commenter said. It was the nervous sound fans made whenever he touched the puck. Like "whoa, whoa, whoa".Unknownhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10441516561755546042noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14971098.post-33543496739362062010-03-11T10:32:12.211-05:002010-03-11T10:32:12.211-05:00And the "O" is still a tradition I hold ...And the "O" is still a tradition I hold dear. I grew up whooping any ex-cap who we disliked, but some people believe it should just be dmen... which to me takes a lot of the fun out of it! Memories of whooping Jagr still makes me feel mildly better... well that and watching Ovie demolish him in the olympics.mrszillanoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14971098.post-43375142358173680912010-03-11T09:16:53.969-05:002010-03-11T09:16:53.969-05:00As someone who had season tickets in section 127 a...As someone who had season tickets in section 127 at the Capital Centre, it wasn't 'whoop' that Larry Murphy originally got serenaded by the fans while he was still in a Caps uniform. It was 'WUS' because we were tired of watching opposing forwards skate right around him to the front of the net w/o getting hit. 'Murphy hit someone with your purse you big WUS!' The chant quickly spread to Gord Murphy of the Flyers, because w/ the same last name he had to be a wus also. Over time it morphed into 'whoop' and a greeting for other former Caps whether they deserved it or not.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14971098.post-3148546004656134802010-03-11T09:11:55.107-05:002010-03-11T09:11:55.107-05:00I beg to differ on whooping Mike Grier. Had he cashed in on just a few of those opportunities, I'd probably be more lenient.SuzukiSandyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11679237671932111254noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14971098.post-69549485273092174272010-03-11T07:36:28.180-05:002010-03-11T07:36:28.180-05:00How could you leave out the only guy to get whoope...How could you leave out the only guy to get whooped more then Murphy? Wasnt there some play, or did he have a tendency to do something(yeah, this is vague) that was some kind of major blunder/gaffe and people would yell "Whoops" and that just evolved into the "Whoop" that we hear now?

Maybe I have no idea what im talking about, but I thought that the "Whoop" came from a more specific instance or call, rather than just people deciding as a collective to make some weird bird noise?Briannoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14971098.post-52493019292460628942010-03-10T23:33:47.579-05:002010-03-10T23:33:47.579-05:00I heard some folks start to "whoop" Poth...I heard some folks start to "whoop" Pothier tonight, but I don't think it caught on, thank God!
