Anatomy of a Mugging

Any wonder how the Hurricanes got out to a 3-0 start against the Caps tonight?...

Check the shot graph* (that's the Caps on the left). The Caps bombed away from outside with 19 shots, accomplishing no more than to bruise Cam Ward's sternum...the 'Canes had ten shots....with three layups among them.

  1. I have been truly disgusted watching this game. I had a goal this year to become a true Caps fan, but these guys are playing with no discipline and no heart. Penalty killing is heart. They are playing with none, and yet they continue to take stupid penalties. I don't know if it is the coaching or the players, and I don't know if I can honestly say I care anymore.

But this is Hanlon's "system." The team just had to make a "simple adjustment." Glen, was the adjustment not "processed" again, as you said? Obviously the team is playing a system which is ineffective. I don't think its execution. Not only is every player a professional, and able to listen to and "process" instruction, but this is a much more talented bunch that Hanlon has under his charge this year. He's not capable of handling it.

The Caps are on pace to almost exactly match Hanlon's record from 06-07. Which is almost exactly his record from 05-06. Hmm . . .

And that's all that matters in Hanlon's eyes. "Hey, at least I'm consistent!"

You provide data but your analysis is a bit lacking.

You should mention that eight of the Capitals "shots" are from the redline and indicative of the Caps line changes whereas when they dump the puck, rather than send the puck into the corner, they shoot the puck on net which allows the goalie to redirect the puck, and essentially allows the opposing goalie to get involved in the offense.

Carolina had 0 shots on net from the redline, indicative that when they change lines, the puck is dumped into the corner and chased by a winger.

This is the tactic that the Caps should look at, i.e., does a shot on net from the redline produce a constructive rebound, or does it merely allow the recipient a better chance at setting up a counter-attack.
