Chewable Bites

If you are a Caps fan...or perhaps a player or a member of the staff...being 30th in the league and looking up at 14 other teams in your conference might look pretty daunting.

Well, your old pal, The Peerless has a thought for you...think of it in "chewable bites." There are 20 weeks remaining in the season until the season-ender against Florida. The Caps -- 6-12-1 at the moment -- are six points below .500. If the Caps are one-point better than .500 a week -- one thin point -- they will finish the season 14 points above .500...96 points.

You do think 96 points will get the boys into the playoffs, don't you?

  1. By one point better than .500 do you mean one point better than if they had even wins and losses for the week? So they'd have to pick up 5 points in a 4 game week, going 2-1-1?

That's much more palatable than what I was thinking - that the team needed a run of 5 wins, 6 of 7, 10 of 12, or something to get back into it.

Interesting way to look at it. Hopefully with Semin back, whatever funk the guys are in will be over and they can actually accomplish this.

  3. Kinda like in Bull Durham, just one more "ground ball with eyes" a week and you'd make the show.

It's hard to be that consistent for that long in the NHL. The real key, IMO, is going on a big tear. If the Caps could go something like 7-0-2 over the next 9 that would do wonders. It would be nice to be that consistent, but that's rarely going to happen for such a long period of time. A major streak winning streak is what the doctor ordered.

  4. I agree -- a streak has to go in there at some point, but if the club can take it a game at a time, a week at a time, instead of looking at what they have to do in 63 games, the streak might take care of itself. And over time, with streaks here and there, things end up regressing to a mean...if that "mean" is one point a week over .500, they'll be fine.

If not, we're going to see a lot of new faces next year.
