18 teams dipped their respective toes into the water on the first day. The big guys are pretty much gone, but
if last year was an indicator, the effect these guys will have will be disappointing relative to the "wow" factor of the signing. But winners?...Losers? The Peerless thinks the winner for Day 1 was Colorado.

I couldn't agree more - Hannan and Smyth were just great additions (and don't think that the added bonus of snatching the latter away from the Wings doesn't make Avs fans extra happy).
As for losers, anyone that signs Daniel Briere to an 8-year deal is crazy. The Rangers also overpaid for Gomez (in length and dollars), and would have been better served, in my opinion, resigning Nylander and a stud defenseman once Drury was in the fold - their D is somewhat suspect. The Devils and Isles are also obvious losers.
My 2 cents.
The problem I have with the Rangers signings is that it is all sizzle and no steak. The Rangers certainly could have used either of those two guys, but both? At the expense of going after some sturdier blue line help? Sather is building another fantasy team, as in, "it's a fantasy that this team will win a Cup."
