Based on the NHLnumbers.com information, after the Green signing, what a 23-man roster might look like, cap-wise...

We'll update this as the opportunities occur...Comments?

Update...well, you leave the computer for a few hours, and your goalie is in Chicago?? And Jose Theodore is a Cap???

It's a wacky world.

Makes a Fedorov signing look tougher and tougher unless you lose a couple of 3/4 line forwards to make room.

Consider $5 million + for UA and another $4 million for Federov and you'd see that the Caps would only have roughly $3 million left for Fehr, Laich, Gordon, and Morrrissonnn.

Now you know why the Caps don't what to give Federov more than $2 million and we could very well end up losing somebody because we just gave Green $5.25 million.

Even if everyone signs at their qualifying offer, and Huet goes for $5M, that makes resigning Fedorov highly unlikely. If Laich gets an offer sheet, I think he probably leaves.

Can someone explain Backstrom's cap number of $2.4m given his base salary is about $800k? In fact his whole rookie contract is about $2.4. Does the cap # include all potential bonuses? And isn't there a limit on bonuses for players on a rookie contract?

anon: Yes, the whole contract has to count against the cap number on those entry year deals. And they are limited from what they were as Malkin and Ovechkin's cap hit for their first deals was upwards of $3.8 million.

Caps signed Theodore 2 years for $9 million. Can't say I like this at all. I suppose Huet was looking for 3-4 years and the Caps wanted a shorter term. That's really the only thing I can think of, there's no reason not to bring Huet back for the money they gave a weaker goaler.

Well, now that Huet is out and Pothier is on "long term injury", the Capitals have a pretty good amount of cap space.

Provided these numbers are accurate, they'd be at about 10.5, with Morrisonn, Fehr, Laich and Gordon left to sign. Even if you assume two million each for Morrisonn and Laich, they four would only account for 6-7 mil, leaving at least 3 mil left to either bring in another depth defenseman or go after Fedorov.
